Mikhail Khodorkovsky and Platon Lebedev have each been sentenced to a total of 14 years’ imprisonment, once the rules on consecutive sentences in force in Russia are applied.
Proceedings are not completed, since the defence has stated its intention to appeal against the sentence.
We urge the Russian authorities to take full account of the concerns which the conduct of this trial has raised. These relate to the necessary affirmation in Russia of the values which are part of our common heritage: primacy of the law and respect for fundamental rights and freedoms.
As President Dmitri Medvedev himself emphasized, consolidation of the rule of law is a necessary condition for Russia’s process of modernization to succeed./.
